The two branchial hearts push blood through the gills to pick up oxygen, while the systemic heart circulates it to the organs. Octopus blood is also blue because it uses copper-based hemocyanin instead of iron-based hemoglobin. Curiously, the systemic heart stops beating when the octopus swims, which is why they often prefer crawling.
