Science
Challenger Deep is located in the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, at a depth of about 36,070 feet (10,994 meters). It is named after HMS Challenger, the British survey ship that first explored it in 1875. The pressure at the bottom is over 1,000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level, a condition in which only specialized, highly-adapted organisms can survive.
